Als hij de mondharmonica hoort op Love Me Do van The Beatles, dan denkt hij vooral terug aan de dag dat hij bij muziekhandel Bergmann in Arnhem dat instrument is gaan betalen, omdat John Lennon het er ooit in een baldadige bui gestolen had. Als hij Talk Of The Town hoort van The Pretenders dan komen de beelden terug van hoe hij een doodzieke Chrissie Hynde uit de struiken van een Japanse oprijlaan trok, en hoe ze hem aankeek en vroeg: Wil je met me trouwen? Als Van Bruggen het prachtige Pale Blue Eyes hoort van de inmiddels overleden Lou Reed dan ziet hij zichzelf weer naast Lou aan de regietafel van een Duitse geluidsstudio zitten…hoe Reed hoogstpersoonlijk Peters oogleden dicht schoof zodat hij beter kon luisteren. Bij Dancing Queen van Abba ziet hij zichzelf in de lift staan bij Anni-frid, Bjorn, Benny en Agnetha, en hoort hij de blonde zangeres in New York aan het Rocherfeller Plaza verzuchten dat ze terug wil naar huis, naar haar kinderen. Met Roger Hodgson van Supertramp stond hij macrobiotisch in pannetjes te roeren, en toen Roger daarna het podium op moest zei hij over zijn schouder tegen Peter: het is genoeg geweest. Ik hou ermee op! Enkele weken daarna stapte hij inderdaad uit Supertramp. Roger and out. The Long Way Home! Nee…als radiomaker Peter van Bruggen een plaatje draaide in het Weeshuis van de Hits of de Breakfast Club…dan dacht hij vaak aan heel andere dingen dan de meeste mensen. Waaraan hij zoal dacht, dat is vanaf te lezen in Logeren Bij Lou, een boek met 21 intieme ontmoetingen met popsterren die we allemaal kennen…of dachten te kennen! Ik ben in de jaren zeventig muzikaal opgevoed door Oor. De verhalen van Bert vd Kamp, Roberto Palombit, Geert Hendrickx maar vooral die van jou verslond ik. Legendarisch was het stuk “Mastermind” over Lou Reed. Natuurlijk ook opgenomen in je prachtige boek, Logeren bij Lou. Wel zeer grondig bewerkt, maar dat is juist een verrijking: het originele, pagina’s lange verhaal bewaar ik in mijn archief.
Dit is literatuur van hoog niveau. En de artiest Lou Reed maakte in het verhaal een grote indruk op me, ben ik zelfs meer gaan waarderen, hoe onmenselijk hij zich ook gedraagt. Wat een kerel.
Het interview met George Harrison zal vast ook een bewerking zijn. Ik heb het nooit bewaard maar wat me (toen een ventje van 16 jaar, verzot op popmuziek) altijd bij blijft is een kop bij het interview, zoiets als “Ik nam Eric Clapton naar de studio in de hoop dat Paul en John zich wat beter zouden gedragen tegen hem”.
Ik hoop van harte dat je nog meer verhalen gaat schrijven (herinneringen?) of meer oude verhalen gaat bundelen. Op deze vreemde manier wil ik je in ieder geval erg danken voor je prachtige verhalen en wijze lessen.
Alleen één ding: geen Lou Reed, zelfs niet Berlin, maar wel In search of Eddie Riff in de lijst met beste platen van de jaren zeventig?? Op nummer drie??
